Beyond Escape has introduced thousands in the San Francisco area to escape rooms via the worldwide phenomenon of Trapped in a Room with a Zombie and the worldwide premiere Trapped in the Circus. We would welcome your team, whether it’s work, play, or family, to come and join our team for an adventure in our escape rooms.
Whether it is the adrenalinized Zombie adventure or a “romp” through a Circus setup, you can find out if you have what it takes to escape in time. So we couldn't find the address after we booked our room. Fairly certain the address doesn't actually exist and this entire fucking thing is a scam. So thanks a lot...all faith in humanity is lost at this point. I didn't think it was possible to create a scam this good but probs to you I guess.

Wow...what an experience! Came here last night with a bunch of coworkers (11 of us total). I didn't know what to expect since this was my first time doing something like this. But it was really fun!! And it definetely put your brain and team building skills to work! The room was pretty warm and it only gets warmer, so try to wear something light. I didn't think we were going to make it out of the room within the given hour, since the team before us kept wishing us good luck before they left. And it was definetely a challenge for us... BUT...WE DID IT!!! *woot woot!* We are zombie room survivors #217! =) The host (Dr. Von Guttenberg) was also pretty funny and definetely contributed to our overall experience. After the game ended, I thought it was awesome how he told us his observations and had pointed out how each of us contributed to the challenge. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and had a great time. I'm now looking forward to trying other similar room escape challenges!

I have been wanting to do one of these escape room things for some time so I was super excited when my employer had an event here with our summer interns. I have nothing to compare this to so this review is probably as much for the concept itself as it is for this specific company.

I can't comment on price/value because I didn't pay. Also I think we may have booked a private experience because even though we only had 9 people we didn't have any strangers with us.
We didn't make it out before our 60 minutes were up :( They say only 30% of the groups do. In our defense, nobody in our group had ever done this kind of thing before so none of us really had any idea what to expect. I think if you have someone who's done this before who can be a group leader you have a much better chance of getting out. They also said we were super close (they probably say that to everyone!) but when they explained the remaining pieces of the puzzle at the end it sure felt like we were pretty far away. At the end they go around the room and say what each person did well (positive comments only). It's a bit cheesy, but it's nice for the team-building aspect.
The game doesn't change so once you've done it you can't do it again but they let you come back for free with friends who have never done it before and be a silent observer (who can signal visually) so that's pretty cool.
I personally would have liked the game much more without the zombie - I'm sure it's a big plus to many people (and no slam at the zombie himself, who was a great actor) but the part I most enjoyed was the actual puzzling and the zombie was just a distraction/interference from that because we couldn't go to parts of the room near him (which, by the end of the game, was basically the whole room).
The neighborhood its in is definitely pretty grungy. I was very glad I didn't have to park my car around there.
I went last night with my friends and it was a great experience! A few of them had done similar puzzle rooms before, but not with the zombie before. The zombie actor was very sweet and didn't tag any of us even though he totally could have. At one point, we started singing/tapping with the zombie and my friend busted out some freestyling rap and it was great.

PROS:
- The puzzles are real brainteasers and will have you hunting all around the room for clues. Think obstacle course as opposed to sit-down puzzles.
- The zombie getting released every 5 min puts you on your toes. It does distract from the actual puzzle solving to a certain extent because you're guarding from them half the time, but it adds a distinct feel to this puzzle room that other themed puzzle rooms don't have.
- The scientist does a round at the end highlighting everyone's accomplishments so it definitely ends on a good note, even if you didn't actually escape from the room. Good for team building!
- Our scientist-coordinator person was friendly and made no assumptions about gender, which was great!
- Friendly zombie! Or as friendly as zombies get, I guess!
CONS:
- The room/building seems to be very poorly ventilated, so in the summer (like now) it's very, very hot. We were all sweating by the end (can't imagine what the poor zombie actor goes through!).
- There isn't much parking in that area, so you might need to park a little further down the street and walk.
- The clues are fairly low-tech, so overuse of the objects may cause some of the writing to fade or the locks to not be perfectly aligned. Some of the stuff written was a little hard to read because of the fading.
- NOT physical-handicap friendly, unfortunately. There's a lot of running around for the clues and there are no elevators to get up to the second floor. Probably not that disability friendly either, since some of the clues are hard to read/see.
MY EXPERIENCE:
I went with a group of 12, which was the max for the room. We were going to huddle beforehand to organize our strategy, but got pulled into the set-up a little early, so missed that part. I think it would have definitely helped to be more organized, especially with so many people in the room. Might have been easier with fewer people and/or clearer idea of strategy.
Didn't know it was this much fun to be trapped in a room with a zombie. Let's do it again!

There were nine in our group of friends who wanted to brave this adventure. Boy, was it exciting! The "assistant professor" or game master was awesome. He explained everything thoroughly and was very entertaining. Then we were off to our doom. The room was like a living room sized room. There were random objects in the room and as soon as we got in we started to look for clues and tried to solve the riddles. I must say, they were pretty clever on the riddles...then a weird buzzer went off and "Dr. Ozzy", the female zombie, came out! That was crazy! The lady zombie was awesome! She interacted with us making this experience even more fun! She really kept us on our toes. At one point, she even asked me to sing Disney songs which entertained her, giving my comrades time to solve the riddles. Sadly, we didn't get out in time, but we were so close! Then the game master announced his observations in the end and applauded each one of the team for their effort. That was a really nice gesture and really made us grateful for each person's part in the game. We may not have escaped this time, but we're coming back for Chapter 2!
I highly recommend this to everyone who wants an unforgettable adventure with friends, family and even strangers!
